OT Assistant (Operation Theatre Assistant)

Job Description

We are looking for a dedicated and responsible OT Assistant to support surgeons, anesthetists, and nursing staff in the smooth functioning of the Operation Theatre. The ideal candidate will assist in preparing the OT, maintaining sterile conditions, handling surgical instruments and equipment, ensuring patient safety, and supporting surgical procedures while following hospital protocols and infection control standards. Key Responsibilities Pre-Operative Duties Prepare and sanitize the Operation Theatre before scheduled surgeries. Arrange surgical instruments, equipment, and consumables required for procedures. Check the functionality of OT equipment, including operating tables, surgical lights, suction machines, and cautery units. Assist in safely transporting patients from the ward or ICU to the Operation Theatre. Verify patient identity and required documentation as per hospital protocols. Intra-Operative Duties Assist surgeons, anesthetists, and OT nurses during surgical procedures. Maintain a sterile environment throughout the surgery. Provide instruments and surgical supplies as directed by the scrub nurse. Handle and label laboratory specimens according to hospital guidelines. Ensure emergency equipment and supplies are readily available during procedures. Post-Operative Duties Assist in transferring patients safely to the recovery room, ICU, or ward. Clean, disinfect, and prepare the Operation Theatre for the next procedure. Dispose of biomedical waste in compliance with Biomedical Waste Management guidelines. Assist in instrument, sponge, and surgical material counts after each procedure. Equipment & Inventory Management Maintain cleanliness and proper storage of OT instruments and equipment. Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment to the concerned department. Monitor and maintain stock levels of surgical consumables and OT supplies. Assist in sending instruments for sterilization (CSSD) and receiving sterile instrument sets. Infection Control & Safety Follow hand hygiene and aseptic techniques at all times. Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required. Adhere to infection prevention, occupational safety, and hospital policies. Follow emergency response and fire safety protocols. Report incidents, safety hazards, or near misses promptly. Documentation Maintain OT registers and procedure records. Record instrument movement and sterilization details. Assist in maintaining inventory and stock records of OT supplies. Education 10+2 (Higher Secondary) or equivalent. Certificate or Diploma in Operation Theatre Technology (OTT) or OT Assistant course preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is an added advantage. Required Skills Knowledge of Operation Theatre procedures and aseptic techniques. Understanding of infection prevention and control practices. Ability to safely handle OT equipment and surgical instruments. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work efficiently under pressure and in emergency situations. Physical stamina to assist with patient handling and prolonged standing. Basic documentation and record-keeping skills.
